Moves by the CFTC to try and regulate the oil trading market and prevent the kind of speculation which has seen crude oil prices rise from $30 per barrel back towards $70+ this year took an interesting twist yesterday when it was announced that the weekly COT data would now include new details on the aggregate holdings of the big Wall Street dealers, hedge funds and other financial participants. COT data is a useful market sentiment tool but as many of the market participants both hedge and speculate it has become increasingly difficult to analyse.
Wendell, your response is very interesting, where exactly is your ranch located? I'm on CR310 (west on 501 from Cherokee) next to the Haverlah Ranch.
Hope to hear from you soon.

"The problem is that for every new barrel of oil discovered the world uses 4 existing barrels."

You have this completely about face. Since the late 1940's world production has outstripped world demand to the extent that for every 1 ton of oil consumed 3 tons have been found to replace it. That is why proven reserves currently stand at all time record highs, despite a human population having doubled over the same period. The world isn't running out of oil, it's running into more and more of it - which is hardly surprising when one recalls that hydrogen and carbon are the most and fourth most abundant elements in the universe respectively.

With best wishes,

Tom

There is gas bubbling up intermittantly in a spring on the west side of the ranch. Don't know what the gas is.......Oil sometimes seeps at a bend where the Cherokee Creek hits a shear wall of Ellenberger Limestone that shows to be the edge of the Barnett Shale play in San Saba Countywith about a 70 degree dip. The creek makes an approximately 80 degree turn to the north along the Ellenberger dip..........Oil also sometimes seeps up near an old oil well casing that is running water to fill a small pond on the west side of my property where I have a water pump installed 200' down the casing..I don't know when that well was drilled............There is also an abandoned oil well casing that was drilled sometime in the 70'w. Only hit water.........THere is no record of either of my abandoned casings on the Texas RR Commission drilling record. I've looked?.......Anybody interested........?.............
